Why do some people claim that antique porcelain can not be TL tested when several reputable labs such as Oxford claim they can TL-test porcelain? Gotheborg also write on their site that “A TL-test could be made on all kinds of fired pottery such as earthenware, stoneware as well as true porcelain”. Is this untrue? What other labs besides Oxford can make TL-tests?
Are there cheaper alternative that are still reliable? They are simply not clear. Only in few cases porcelain can be TL tested. They too say that, just not clearly in the main page. This is known to anyone. Competent, reliable, managed by an Authority in the field, at half price in respect to Oxford, and very collaborative, unlike Oxford. Besides that, they provide the graph of the test, which is expect for whatever test being commissioned. There are no other tests for dating ceramics.
Note that TL too is not totally reliable.

The following information has been kindly supplied by Oxford Authentication Ltd, the Internationally recognised leader in the authentication of antique ceramics. The company is headed by a qualified physicist with almost 40 years experience in this field and is the only company recognised by major international auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, as well as museums and other international institutions.
When a sample of pottery is heated to a sufficiently high temperature it emits a faint blue light known as thermoluminescence, or TL.

The present review article contains various applications of Thermoluminescence. The phenomena of thermoluminescence TL or thermally stimulated luminescence TSL and optically stimulated luminescence OSL are widely used for measurement of radiation doses from ionizing radiations, viz. The applications of TL are initiated in the field of Geology followed by Archaeology, personal dosimetry, material characterization and many more to name.
The TL technique has been found to be useful in dating specimens of geologically recent origin where all other conventional methods fail. It has been found to be highly successful in dating ancient pottery samples. The main basis in the Thermoluminescence Dosimetry TLD is that TL output is directly proportional to the radiation dose received by the phosphor and hence provides the means of estimating the dose from unknown irradiations.
The TL dosimeters are being used in personnel, environmental and medical dosimetry. During the last two decades, OSL based dosimeters have also been used for various applications. Natural and induced TL signals can be used to explore mineral, oil and natural gas.
This paper aims to provide an overview concerning the optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating method and its applications for geomorphological research in France. An outline of the general physical principles of luminescence dating is given. A case study of fluvial sands from the lower terrace of the Moselle valley is then presented to describe the range of field and laboratory procedures required for successful luminescence dating.
The paper also reviews the place of OSL dating in geomorphological research in France and assesses its potential for further research, by focusing on the diversity of sedimentary environments and topics to which it can be usefully applied.

The OSL optically stimulated luminescence dating method exploits dosimetric properties of grains of minerals naturally occurring in sediments and man-made materials. In archaeology the OSL method is used to date pottery and other heated materials e. When compared with the radiocarbon method it makes possible dating objects containing no organic matter or originating in periods for which the radiocarbon method is less accurate due to the shape or lack of the calibration curve.

Thermoluminescence dating TL is the determination, by means of measuring the accumulated radiation dose, of the time elapsed since material containing crystalline minerals was either heated lava , ceramics or exposed to sunlight sediments. As a crystalline material is heated during measurements, the process of thermoluminescence starts.
Thermoluminescence emits a weak light signal that is proportional to the radiation dose absorbed by the material. It is a type of luminescence dating. Sediments are more expensive to date.
Thermoluminescence tests are an important factor when dealers and collectors judge authenticity. But TL has its limitations. First, in order to insure profitability, commercial labs often limit the number of samples they take from terra cottas for analysis, generally drawing them from only two parts of a piece.
Scientists who run the labs say this number is insufficient in view of the con game now taking place with terra cottas. Then there is the matter of who takes the samples. Since TL testing is a global business, it is impractical for directors of commercial firms to take all the samples themselves. While we have no reason to doubt the honesty of these representatives, the art world in which they operate is not always concerned with professional ethics.
Dealers are capable of bribing the experts.
Thermoluminescence and its Applications: A Review
For most of history, humans have made every possible effort to accurately foretell the weather, evolving from the use of guesswork, rule of thumb, and signs in the sky to the development of contemporary forecasting techniques drawn from two scientific disciplines, climatology and meteorology. Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather, Second Edition summarizes this knowledge and presents it in a compendium of over entries that cover:. Each entry features numerous cross references and definitions of weather and climate-related terms as well as additional sources for further study.

Tests can also be fooled. I had a Benin bronzes with a TL test from the inside core, and after doing a test on internal corrosion it proved not to be a valid test. Also testing the core is not enough as a valid proof of age, since for bronzes you need to know if there is an internal corrosion in the metal, and the metal composition. Thermoluminescence C14 test can only be used to date Terracotta’s older than years.
Thermoluminescence (TL) dating is now widely used in the age determination of Paleolithic sites. Although The advantages and disadvantages of TL dating of heated flint will be discussed here and Oxford: Oxford University Press. Aitken.
Bell W. The refinement of the automated TL dating procedure and perspectives for the archaeological application of the method as demonstrated by the results from sites of known age. The use of an automated reader for thermoluminescence dating at Ris0 has already been described at last year’s Symposium and at the Specialist TL Seminar in Oxford in July Further refinements to the dating method are described here including the necessity for a separate beta source calibration for each individual sample and the use of a scintillation counter as a new method of determining the on-site background gamma dose.
The results of a TL dating programme on a number of well -dated Danish archaeological excavation sites are then presented and the TL ages are compared, where possible, to the known ages obtained from other dating methods. The perspectives for the further archaeological application of the method are then discussed. BELL , V. The main features of the reader are: 1 a turntable with 24 positions in which platinum cups containing the sample to be dated may be placed; and 2 a microprocessor unit which automatically controls the irradiation and glow out of the samples.
The reader has been in operation. These modifications are described in the first part of this paper, and the results of some dating programmes which have been undertaken using the routine method are presented in the second part.
